Tesla Model 3 Canada Orders Paused Until 2027
Tesla Model 3 Canada orders for the cheaper Premium trims are paused. Both the rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive Premium versions disappeared from the Canadian configurator in mid-October. The only Model 3 still available to order is the higher-priced Performance. Tesla’s site says high demand exhausted its import quota and that orders may resume in March 2027 if the government issues more.
These Premium cars are built in Shanghai. The rear-wheel-drive version started near $39,490 before fees. That made it one of the more accessible new Teslas in Canada.
What the quota numbers show
Canada’s current quota year runs to February 28, 2027. It allows up to 49,000 Chinese-made EVs at the regular 6.1 percent tariff. As of the October 9 report, only about 15,931 permits had been used. Roughly 33,069 spots remained available. The second half of the year started with about 33,397 permits after unused ones rolled over from the first period.
There is no published per-manufacturer limit. Global Affairs Canada has not explained why Tesla says its own allocation is finished while most of the national quota is still open. Tesla’s Canadian policy lead has said the department gives automakers advance notice of the maximum number they can expect. No specific figure for Tesla has been made public.
What it means for buyers
If you wanted the lower-priced Shanghai-built Model 3 Premium, you cannot order one right now. The Performance remains available. Waiting until March 2027 is one option. Looking at other cars under $40,000 after the federal rebate is another.
Chinese-built cars generally do not qualify for the EVAP rebate because China is not a free-trade partner. Confirm the current eligible list if the $5,000 federal amount matters to you.
