Stellantis Chinese Jeep EVs Canada 2027

Stellantis Chinese Jeep EVs could arrive in Canada starting in 2027. A joint venture with Dongfeng plans to build two electrified Jeep models in China for export markets that include Canada. However, Stellantis Canada says it is still premature to confirm any Canadian launch.

What models are planned?

The Dongfeng Stellantis joint venture will produce two off-road-focused Jeep models at its Wuhan plant. One will be a battery-electric vehicle and the other a plug-in hybrid. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027. The models are expected to debut in China in the second half of that year before any export begins.

Lv Haitao, general manager of Dongfeng Stellantis Automotive Technology, named Canada and Mexico as potential export destinations. The United States is not on the list. No model names, pricing, or volume targets have been released yet.

Stellantis Canada response

Stellantis Canada spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin described talk of a Canadian launch as “premature.” She also stated that possible Chinese imports were not a factor in decisions about the idled Brampton, Ontario plant. The vehicles would still need to meet Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards before any sales could begin. Certification can take considerable time and cost.

Why this matters for Canadian buyers

Canada currently allows up to 49,000 China-built electric vehicles per year at a 6.1% tariff. This lower rate replaced the previous 100% surtax. As a result, several Chinese brands are exploring the Canadian market. Jeep models built under the Dongfeng partnership could join that list if Stellantis moves forward.

At the same time, Unifor has called the idea of importing Chinese-built Jeeps unacceptable while the Brampton plant remains closed. The situation creates uncertainty for both workers and potential buyers.

What happens next?

No timeline for Canadian availability has been confirmed. Even if production starts in 2027, the vehicles are unlikely to reach Canadian dealers the same year. Certification, pricing, and final market decisions still need to be completed.
