Chinese EV Imports Rise in Canada Under Quota System

Chinese EV Imports Canada have increased steadily in 2026 under the federal quota system. By late July, more than 9,000 Chinese-built electric vehicles had cleared customs. This represents nearly 38 percent of the first half-year quota of 24,500 units.Shanghai-built Tesla Model 3 representing Chinese EV Imports Canada

Most of these imports so far have been Tesla Model 3 vehicles built in Shanghai. Tesla restarted Canadian sales of the China-made Model 3 earlier this year at a competitive price. Other Chinese brands have shipped very few vehicles so far, though several are preparing market entry.

The quota allows up to 49,000 Chinese-built EVs per year at a reduced tariff rate. The current window runs until the end of August, with another allocation opening in September.

This development gives Canadian buyers more affordable EV choices. At the same time, it increases competition for domestic and traditional brands already selling electric vehicles in the country.

Overall, Chinese EV Imports Canada are becoming a more visible part of the local market in 2026.
