CX-5 vs Tiguan Canada 2026: Which SUV Wins

The CX-5 vs Tiguan Canada fight is a compact-SUV rematch. Both are new or heavily updated for 2026. Both come with all-wheel drive. Neither is cheap once you add destination.

Power

The CX-5 still uses a 2.5-litre four. It makes 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft, through a six-speed automatic. It feels calm, not quick.

The Tiguan’s base turbo 2.0-litre makes 201 horsepower and 221 lb-ft. The Highline R-Line Turbo jumps to 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. That is an 81 hp gap over the Mazda on the top gas Tiguan. The VW feels sharper in a pass and in a corner.

Space and cabin

The Mazda wins the trunk. Cargo is 954 litres with the seats up and 1,882 litres folded. The Tiguan is 750 litres up and 1,668 litres down. Rear headroom and legroom are close.

The CX-5 uses a three-piece rear seat, so the centre can fold as a pass-through. The Tiguan is a 60/40 split. Mazda’s seat feels more natural. VW’s pillars are thicker in a tight turn.

Both screens are large. Mazda has Google built-in with a one-year voice trial. VW keeps a volume knob and temperature sliders, which is easier on the move. VW also adds massage seats and 30 ambient-light themes on upper trims.

Fuel and ride

Official CX-5 ratings are 9.9 L/100 km in the city, 7.9 on the highway, and 9.0 combined. A test loop returned 9.1. The Tiguan Turbo is rated 10.7 city, 8.0 highway, and 9.5 combined. The test car used 11.1.

A Forester, CR-V, or Rogue still sips less. Neither of these two is the efficiency pick. The CX-5 rides smoother on 19-inch wheels. The Tiguan on 20s is firmer but more agile.

Which one to buy

Pick the Tiguan if you want the stronger engine and the sportier drive. Pick the CX-5 if cargo, a softer ride, and a lower test price matter more. Mazda still needs a hybrid before this rematch flips.

This is a gas comparison. If you are cross-shopping an EV, the rebate math is separate.

Would you take the CX-5’s trunk, or the Tiguan’s extra power?
