Winter Tires Canada 2026 are not optional if you drive snow. All-seasons stiffen below about 7°C. A true winter tire stays soft. It uses a colder rubber mix and deep sipes that bite into snow and ice. Fit all four. Two winters on the front and two old tires on the rear is how cars spin.
Book the swap in the first half of October. Shops fill once the first storm hits. After the install, retorque the wheel nuts after about 100 km.

What the changeover costs
A shop that pulls summer tires and fits winters you already own usually charges $120 to $160 for four. Mounting and balancing one tire on a rim is about $30 to $40. Four unmounted tires land in the same $120 to $160 band. Larger than 20-inch wheels can cost more.
If the winters are already on their own rims, the job is closer to a rotation: $30 to $40 total. Dedicated rims run about $100 each. Tire pressure sensors add more. An $800 set can pay for itself in about five years of twice-a-year swaps.
Look for sales and rebates. Check the warranty. Some insurers discount once you prove the winter set. Store the off-season tires indoors, away from sun.
Types that matter
Look for the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) mark. That is the tested snow tire symbol. Quebec requires it from December 1 to March 15.
Non-studded winters use soft compounds, sipes, and sometimes tiny crystals in the rubber. They work on mixed city and highway roads. Studded tires bite better on glare ice. They are louder, wear pavement, and are banned in Quebec. Other provinces allow them only in a set winter window. Confirm your province before you buy studs.
Entry-level winters do the job with more noise and shorter life. Premium non-studded tires, such as a current Nokian Hakkapeliitta R-series, cost more and usually last longer and ride quieter.
EV owners
Electric cars are heavier. Check the load rating. Most good winter sizes are extra load, which helps. Range will drop in the cold with any tire. Winter rubber does not fix that. It just keeps you on the road.
