You should buy EV before 2027 only if the car can be delivered and the dealer can file the claim while the higher rebate is still live. In 2026 a qualifying battery EV can get $5,000. In 2027 that federal amount falls to $4,000. Plug-in hybrids drop from $2,500 to $2,000.
That $1,000 gap is real. It is not the only clock. Quebec’s Roulez vert extra ends December 31, 2026. A late delivery can cost you both cheques.

What changes on January 1
EVAP pays at the point of sale through an enrolled dealer. Transport Canada ties the amount to the date the dealer submits the eligibility assessment, not the day you shake hands.
So a December order that is filed in January can land on the 2027 rate. Ask the store when they will submit the claim. Get that date in writing.
The program itself runs to March 31, 2031, or until the money runs out. As of early September 2026, about $2 billion of the $2.275 billion fund was still left. Waiting does not kill the rebate. It shrinks it.
Quebec is the tighter deadline
Roulez vert still pays up to $2,000 on a new battery EV registered in 2026. In 2027 that provincial amount is $0 under current rules. The date that counts is registration, not the deposit.
A Quebec buyer who stacks both programs in 2026 can reach $7,000. In 2027 the stack is $4,000 federal only, if the car still clears EVAP.
Who should buy now
Buy before year-end if:
- The dealer can register the car in 2026, especially in Quebec.
- The final transaction value stays at $50,000 or less, unless the vehicle is made in Canada.
- You already need a car. A $1,000 federal cut is not worth a bad deal, but it is worth taking if the car is ready.
Safe rebate picks include the Nissan Leaf S, Chevrolet Bolt, Kia EV3 Light, Toyota bZ XLE FWD, and a discounted Equinox EV LT. The MINI Countryman Elementary Edition is priced at $49,990 for this reason.
Who should wait
Wait if delivery is already set for 2027. A deposit will not lock the 2026 rate. Wait if the trim you want sits over $50,000 after options. Losing the whole rebate hurts more than missing $1,000.
Also wait if you are shopping a Chinese-built car under the import quota. Those models generally do not get EVAP.
A simple rule
If the car is on the lot and the contract stays under the cap, buy EV before 2027. If the store cannot name a 2026 registration or claim date, assume the lower 2027 rate.
Confirm both programs before you sign. Rules and remaining funds can change.
