The 2028 Volvo XC40 refresh is a styling and tech update, not a new powertrain. The bigger Canada story sits next to it. Volvo will not bring the updated electric EX40 back. Sales were too low. The brand will push the EX30, the new EX60, and the EX90 instead.
So the gas XC40 stays. It remains Volvo’s smallest fuel-burning SUV in this market. Dealers should see it in the first quarter of 2027, or soon after. Pricing is not out yet.

Volvo calls this a second generation. Under the skin it is a major refresh of the car that launched in 2018. The platform and engine stay put.
The turbo 2.0-litre four still makes 247 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive remains. This is a mild-hybrid gas model, not a plug-in.
Outside, the front gets a new grille, a more sculpted hood, and simpler Thor’s Hammer matrix LED lights. The tailgate and bumper sit lower and wider. Rear lights are cleaner and nod to older Volvo wagons. New diamond-cut wheels come in 18-, 19-, and 20-inch sizes.
Inside, an 11.2-inch vertical screen replaces the old 9-inch display. It sits deeper in the dash. New trim includes Arianne Cardamom leather with brown ash wood. Storage and cabin lighting are updated. Google Gemini handles voice commands and trip planning. Over-the-air updates continue.
Safety updates
New cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors improve parking. A door-opening alert warns of passing cyclists or traffic. An optional 360-degree camera adds a 3D view. Lane-change assist joins Pilot Assist. Emergency steering, automatic emergency braking, and collision avoidance are refreshed.

The 2028 Volvo XC40 refresh keeps a popular compact crossover alive without forcing a full EV. That fits a market that still buys gas and mild-hybrid SUVs. If you wanted the electric EX40, look at the EX30 or wait for the EX60.
