2026 Silverado Trail Boss: Long-Term Test Wrap-Up

The 2026 Silverado Trail Boss spent two months in mixed Canadian use. Testers used the LT Crew Cab for commuting, hauling, and light off-roading. In that time, the truck covered 4,714 kilometres and showed how a lifted half-ton works as both a work rig and a family vehicle.

What the 2026 Silverado Trail Boss adds

The 2026 Silverado Trail Boss sits between Chevy’s Z71 package and the costlier ZR2. Z71 adds basics such as low-range four-wheel drive, hill descent control, and a skid plate. Trail Boss goes further with a lifted Rancho suspension. However, it does not get the ZR2’s DSSV dampers or front locking differential.

Every Trail Boss includes Z71 equipment. The reverse is not true. Shoppers should also note trim differences. Trail Boss is offered on the mid-level LT and on a more basic Custom. The tested LT Trail Boss was limited to white, black, or grey paint.

Fuel use and the 6.2L V8

The tester used the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 and 10-speed automatic. Over eight weeks, it burned 593 litres of regular gasoline. That cost just over $1,000. Average consumption was 12.6 L/100 km. That is better than NRCan’s 15.7 L/100 km combined rating.

Highway runs at about 105 km/h often dropped into the low 10s. Around town, the 10-speed sometimes delayed a downshift after a slow roll. Power itself was never short. The V8 still delivers strong pull and a deep exhaust note.

Daily driving and work use

The lifted stance helps off-road. It also hurts parking-lot manoeuvres. The turning circle is 14.4 metres, or 47.1 feet. That forces extra three-point turns at fuel stations and tight lots.

Payload on the tester was 1,525 pounds. Conventional towing was rated at 9,100 pounds. Those figures make the truck useful for trailers and cargo. Even so, tongue weight still counts against payload, so a heavy trailer leaves less room for people and gear.

How it compares

Ford’s Tremor and Ram’s Backcountry sit in a similar mid-level off-road space. All three can land near $75,000 after discounts, depending on options. The tested LT Trail Boss started at $71,599 before a large options list.

In short, the 2026 Silverado Trail Boss is a capable V8 pickup with real lift and everyday usefulness. Fuel use was better than expected. The wide turning circle and limited LT colour choices are the main drawbacks. For more vehicle coverage, see NextEV and our reviews.
